Ryde Second Storey Addition

A full second storey added to an existing single-level home in Ryde. The new upper floor was framed and built on top of the existing structure, giving the family the extra space they needed without giving up their block or their suburb.

Key Features

  • Full second storey framed over existing roofline
  • Structural steel and engineered timber framing
  • New roof structure tied into existing building envelope
  • Ground floor layout preserved during construction
  • Built in an established neighbourhood with properties on both sides

The Brief

The family had outgrown their single-level home but didn't want to sell. They loved the location and the street. The brief was to add a second storey with additional rooms and living space, keep the ground floor intact, and manage the build without it dragging on or disrupting the neighbours more than necessary.

The Build

Careful partial demolition of the existing roof structure to create a new second-storey addition within the original roofline. A new engineered structural floor system was introduced into the existing attic space, followed by lightweight timber framing and a pitched roof designed to maximise internal space while remaining compliant with council height restrictions.

The Outcome

A seamless second-storey addition that delivers significant new living space for the family without compromising the home’s existing streetscape or character. Designed to feel as though it has always been part of the original home, the finished addition balances functionality, structural performance, and long-term liveability — built to be enjoyed for generations.
