Unused Side Yard to Centerpiece

A full external overhaul of a Bellevue Hill backyard. What started as an unused side yard with poor drainage and no shade is now the part of the home the family spends most of their time in. New stormwater, custom strip drains, large format paving, and a built-in outdoor kitchen with BBQ and pizza oven, built around the natural sandstone rock face that defines the site.

Key Features

  • Full external works from the ground up
  • New stormwater system and custom strip drains
  • Large format paving across the full area
  • Custom outdoor kitchen with built-in BBQ and Alfa pizza oven
  • Stone benchtop on black slatted cabinetry
  • Outdoor dining for six
  • Established plantings and boundary screening

The Brief

The family loved their home but the backyard wasn't pulling its weight. Water from the rock face was running straight into the house, the existing paving was uneven, and there was nowhere to actually sit, cook, or eat outside. They wanted somewhere they could use most weekends, somewhere the kids could be in and out of, and a setup that didn't need constant upkeep. Practical, durable, and built to handle the site properly.

The Build

The drainage came first. Bellevue Hill backyards often sit against sandstone, and without managing the runoff, anything we built on top would have failed. We installed new stormwater and strip drains, then laid large format pavers across the full area with the right falls so the surface stays dry. The custom outdoor kitchen with built-in BBQ and Alfa pizza oven were built on top, all designed to make the space usable year round.

The Result

A backyard that finally earns its space. The drainage handles whatever Sydney weather throws at it, the kitchen runs from quick weeknight dinners through to weekend pizza nights with friends, and the finishes hold up without constant maintenance. The natural sandstone rock face stays as the feature it always was, with everything else built to match. It went from a side yard the family avoided to the spot they end up most evenings.
